VIVA Mutual eNews March 2024

Has it been hot or humid enough for ya?!

In January, when the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) was forecasting a delayed summer,
VIVA Home Nurse Lisa shared some tips for keeping well in the heat and humidity. She
reminds us all to:

  1. Stay hydrated (drinks heaps of water or sugar-free beverages)

  2. Protect yourself from the sun (use hats, umbrellas, sunscreen and stay in the shade)

  3. Manage heat stress (find out about what this is, learn to recognise it and what to do if
you see it in yourself or someone else)

  4. Enjoy summer foods (fresh fruits are in season, try chilled smoothies and soups)

  5. Go outside when it is coolest and most accessible for you (don’t let the weather lock
you up at home and plan ahead to be out at the best times of the day, and in places
where you’re protected from the heat)

  6. Keep checking your physical health (keep appointments with medical and therapy
people, listen to what your body is telling you)

  7. Keep checking your mental well-being too (take time for the things you enjoy and
    avoid the ones you don’t!)

  8. Sleep well (hot nights can disrupt sleep, which can cause problems during the day)

  9. Stay connected (to your family, friends, support providers and healthcare people)

  10. Be prepared for issues and emergencies (like power cuts, like bushfires – if you’re in
    that area, like health challenges).

These tips are as important today as they were in January and with a bit of planning and self-care, you can enjoy a healthy and happy (delayed!) summer too. For more information, check out Lisa’s article here.

Our first-ever VIVA DAY!

On February 29th, VIVA Mutual held a party among the cool greens at Adelaide Bowling Club to celebrate our newly proclaimed “VIVA Day” (aka ANY excuse for a party!).

Members of our vibrant VIVA community played bowls and lawn games, danced with ribbons and we ate and drank like kings!

If you weren’t able to join us, always keep an eye out in our newsletters for invitations to our VIVA community activities.

Same VIVA, new look!

The VIVA Mutual team have been working on a new design for our “look”, that is our polo shirts, cards & flyers, letterheads and digital communications (like this one). It brings new, happy colours to our days and we hope that you like it as much as we do. If you have any questions or suggestions, please send them to our co-founder Arthur via this email link.

VIVA’s Easter and ANZAC Day operations: we’re always open

Easter is rushing up on our calendars and we want everyone to know that it will be “business as usual” over the four days of Easter at the end of March and, ANZAC Day in April

Easter is 4 days of national public holidays, as follows:

  • Friday 29 March: Good Friday
  • Saturday 30 March: Easter Saturday
  • Sunday 31 March: Easter Sunday
  • Monday 1 April: Easter Monday

And of course, ANZAC Day is Thursday 25
th April.

We recommend that you plan your activities and support early because it is always a busy time on the roads, in centres, in cinemas and generally out and about.

Vale Camille

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our colleague and dear friend, Camille, who enjoyed her successful and impactful career dedicated to supporting people within the disability sector. Camille was not only a pillar of support for the individuals she worked with directly, but she was also a source of strength and inspiration to her many colleagues and the wider community.

Camille was admired for her commitment to driving better outcomes for her clients, as well as for all people living with disabilities and their families and she devoted much of her time and energy to this cause, always going above and beyond to ensure that those around her felt supported, valued, and understood. Her legacy is one of unwavering kindness, excellent support, and an unending belief in the potential of every individual she worked with.

We extend our deepest condolences to Camille’s loving family and partner during this difficult time. Your loss is felt by all of us, and we stand with you in mourning her loss.

Thank you, Camille, we are all the better for having known and worked alongside you. Your spirit and the impact of your work and ethos will continue to be a part of who we are at VIVA Mutual.

Have your say…

From time to time, our state government invites the public to tell them what they think about matters that involve them. VIVA Mutual is a big fan of community consultation and we encourage you to participate and have your say, whenever it moves you to do so.

At present, we’re all being invited to have our say on the SA Autism Strategy and this opportunity closes on 29 March.  Find out more and have your say here.
