Fall in Love with Yourself this Valentine’s Day!

Fall in Love with Yourself this Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day is the time of year when retailers make us feel like mushy love between couples is everywhere you look! However, this day doesn’t have to be about grand romantic gestures or exclusive partnerships. Instead, it can serve as a beautiful reminder to cherish the most enduring relationship you will ever have: the one with yourself.

This Valentine’s Day, let’s shift the narrative from one of romantic love to one of self-love and care. VIVA Mutual Home Nursing Team are of the firm opinion that self-love isn’t selfish; it’s vitally necessary to managing our physical and mental health. And by caring for ourselves, we are better equipped to support and love others.

So let’s follow the VIVA Nurses’ orders and use this day to celebrate our individuality, our resilience, and the love we have for ourselves. Here are some of their ideas for free or low-cost ways to treat yourself and make your Valentine’s Day special and fun:

Home Spa Experience

Transform your bathroom into a spa sanctuary. Light some candles (safely), play your favourite music, and draw a warm bath. If you’ve got some bath salts or oils on hand, add them too. The therapeutic effects of a warm bath can soothe the mind and relax the body.

Nature’s Embrace

Connect with nature. Get out and visit your local park, beach, or even just outside the door. Sunlight is good for wellbeing and nature has a unique way of comforting the soul and reminding us of the world’s natural rhythm and beauty.

Indulge in creativity. Grab some paper and pencils and draw or doodle whatever comes to mind. Write a poem, a short story, a children’s adventure story or journal your thoughts and feelings. Crafting, cooking, or baking can also be therapeutic and a fun way to express yourself. The act of creating something can be incredibly satisfying and a wonderful distraction from negative thoughts.

Practice yoga or gentle stretching in your chair or anywhere. There are plenty of free resources online that can guide you through a session. Focus on your breath and the movements that release tension. This can help centre your thoughts and reduce stress, enhancing your sense of well-being.

Digital Detox:

Take a break from all media and the constant barrage of news, ads and information that we’re frequently exposed to. Spend the day disconnected from the outside world and reconnect with your inner self. Read a book, listen to music, or simply sit in silence and meditate.

Have a special meal. Look for something that you’ve never tried before but have always wanted to. Or you might just prefer to enjoy one of your tried and loved favourites. It’s your choice today!

Invest time in learning something new. It could be some words, a craft, or a subject you’ve always been interested in. Many websites, libraries and community centres offer free or inexpensive courses. And remember, learning stimulates the mind and provides us with a sense of accomplishment and growth.

Gratitude and Giving

Write a letter to yourself, highlighting your strengths, achievements, and what you love about yourself. Alternatively, write letters of gratitude to people in your life, expressing your appreciation for them. Expressing gratitude can significantly lift your spirits and let you focus on the positive aspects of your life.

Look Up

If the night is clear, why not spend some time star gazing? It’s a humbling and beautiful reminder of the vastness of the universe and we can let our minds run free as we imagine the people, past and present, who have done the same thing.

Connect with Your Community

Finally, consider reaching out to a community or support group. Sharing your time and experiences with others can be rewarding, helpful to everyone and therapeutic.

Remember, self-care is not selfish; it’s essential. Whether you’re someone with a disability or a support coordinator, taking these steps ensures a healthier and happier you.

So let’s redefine what it means to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Turn it into a day of self-love and care and find joy in the simplicity of being ourselves and living the lives of our choosing.
