To improve long-term health outcomes, The VIVA Home Nursing Team recommends that we all live a healthy lifestyle as often as we can manage. For some of us, this is relatively easy, and it’s not so easy for others and you’re always welcome to book a consultation with an experienced VIVA nurse to work out ways to manage your health, the health and wellbeing of those you support too.

Here are some of the VIVA Home Nursing team’s suggestions for ways to live healthier, every day:

Dietary Adjustments

Reduce consumption of processed foods, sugars, and unhealthy fats. Aim for a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Consider participating in challenges to give you motivation to reduce – or give up – unhealthy foods or drinks.

Physical Activity

Commit to regular physical exercise. This could be as simple as daily movement, taking a walk in the garden, going around the block, joining a fitness class, or engaging in a favourite sport. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.

Mental Health

Prioritize your mental well-being by actively engaging in practices such as mindfulness, meditation, or yoga. Make it a deliberate point to allocate time daily for activities that not only reduce stress but also significantly increase your overall happiness and sense of inner peace.

Substance Moderation

At the start of each month, take it as an opportunity to reduce or completely eliminate harmful habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, or any form of substance abuse. Don’t allow procrastination to take hold, and never hesitate to reach out for support from groups or professionals who can offer assistance and guidance on your journey to a healthier lifestyle.

Health Check-ups

Make it a habit to schedule regular health screenings and check-ups with your General Practitioner (GP) or other healthcare professionals. Emphasizing the importance of early detection of health issues can lead to more effective health management and significantly improved outcomes.

Hydration and Sleep

Make sure to maintain sufficient hydration by aiming to drink at least 2 liters of water daily, and strive for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to foster overall good health and well-being.

Community Engagement

Participate in community health challenges or join health-focused groups. Being an active member of a supportive community can offer both motivation and accountability, helping to dispel feelings of isolation and loneliness.

These steps not only contribute to immediate health improvements but also help people to grow sustainable, long-term healthy habits.
